Day 4,002

The Plan That Wasn’t “A,” but Sometimes “B” is Better

Friday: we were supposed to be in the Keys, Adam and I, celebrating our belated Tenth anniversary. Well, at the last second, the trip was postponed/canceled due to a deceptive triple—yes TRIPLE—booking of our hotel room, which the hotel has since refused to refund us for. So, we’re currently working with a travel agency to amend the situation, but until then, we get to  spend more time with the babes and our girl Taylor!

:)
Hair train!

Friday was busy. We dug in the mud with our friends,

bashed through brick and concrete walls,

got all ready,

and took some team photos.

Day 3,972

The Dead Key Pad

We interrupt your movie…

…for a Conley break-in.
Desperate times call for toddler doggy door intrusions.

And Christmas light drive-byes for all your hard work!

Day 3,963

The Moldy Cracks

If you hadn’t noticed, they love their puppy and they love their princess nightgowns!

What I don’t love, however, is that ALL of my dishes cracked and molded in storage. Not cool.

But at least she’s cute enough to relieve me of my frustrations !

And in case you didn’t notice again, wherever I am, there they are, even in my tiny adorable kitchen💗

Day 3,704

The Snag and the Racecar

Another day at The Property, this time with a lot more planning, a few more snags in our current plans, and one little boy especially interested in how it’s all going to come together.

Though the day at the Property was long and emotional (welcome to home building), we got a HUGE pick me up when we stopped by the shop to see how Daddy’s car is coming along!! It’s nearly ready! And it’s looking especially “mean” with its new paint job! Adam got to take it for a ride for his first time ever and the panic in my heart was worth seeing the giant goofy smile on his face. That thing is terrifyingly fast and I might ban him from ever driving it again, but it’ll at least be fun to look at ;)

I’m certain that this is the most quiet my car has ever been with these four gremlins in it. We’re almost always home in time for naps, but Thursday got away from us quickly—thankfully, at least for this moment, our home is currently so far away that they had plenty of time to snooze.

Day 3,658

The Last Tampa Trip

We checked out of our Airbnb at 10AM on Wednesday (Mom got four hours of sleep woo!), stopped to say goodbye to The Property (we can’t wait to share the land with you, peacocks!), ate breakfast with Gammy (you’re a treasure!), went and bought a new phone (salt water is no joke—be warned it’ll kill your mother board)

said goodbye, and headed West.

Daddy played his last game of a ten-game road series while we drove to our new home in St. Pete for the month.

I think Bearett must have read 15 books on the way, including the Wizard of Oz which claimed the title of his favorite. This boy continues to be enthralled by his ability to get lost in stories, of which I am so excited about! His love for reading is incredible and though I’m still not sure exactly how it happened, I’m just so happy it did!

Hello Central Florida!

And hello Pineapple Palace!
We are home for the month!

Day 3,654

The Sun Soaked Phone Soaked, Happening of a Day

Bub had his first Fall Ball workout on Saturday and he looked incredible! He won't be back with his team until the end of Dad's season, but we're sure looking forward to spending some time on the diamond this fall with his new team: the Marlins!

Warning you about her now.
She's an insane person.
Daddy calls her Ankle Biter.
He's right.

And in case you didn't fully anticipate this photo: here's Ella Mae with yet another dog. I know exactly what she's getting from every birthday from now until forever.

Dun. Dun. Duuuunnnnn.
The day my phone died.
I'm not going to say it was totally worth ruining my phone, but getting pictures of my kids and their Gammy in the waves together for the first was pretty high on my list.

That was the wave.
Splashed right over my arm and onto my phone.
Here I was thinking I could literally drop my phone into water and it wouldn't get ruined (that's their marketing, right?!), and all I got was a wimpy splash and bam, a thousand dollars (that's how much these stupid phones are costing these days) just like that. Lesson learned.
But she was just having so much fun and it made me that happy.
Love you, Gammy!

Day Thirteen Hundred and Thirty-Five

The Mistake I Won't Make Again

It was supposed to be a five and a half hour trip.
358 miles from New Orleans to Memphis.
Yeah, it took us nine.
And all the extra minutes accumulated in this position here.
Back seat.
Side of the road.
Baby on lap.

She wouldn't fall asleep on her own (no surprise there), but she also wouldn't stay asleep alone (huge surprise there).
- Problem -
So, I did the best I could and held her eyes shut (while shaking the car seat with my other hand) until she fell asleep...and then sat there like this (and in other positions I won't mention now because driving with one arm outstretched behind you from the front seat probably isn't all that legal) until I felt like I could remove my hand without her realizing my deception. Then I'd crawl back into the front seat and inch the hair dryer sound effect up a couple notches on the volume dial. It obviously didn't work as well as I'd hoped, seeing that every hour, we played this game...over and over and over.

But guess what?
We're alive.
We're happy.
She has the cutest double chin.
And the long road trip was completely worth it when we laid eyes on Daddy.
I'm just not so sure that there will ever be a next time the way we did it. Driving solo for that long doesn't exactly work with a 10 week old (yeah, she was TEN weeks yesterday). At least not for mine.

Oh Mom, please don't tell me we have to do that again?!

Day Thirteen Hundred and Five

The Super Soakers

A picture of my soaked-through t-shirt maybe isn't an appropriate photo of the day. Maybe it is - I haven't decided yet. In any case, I bought these cotton reusable pads because the disposable ones make me feel like I'm wearing diapers in my shirt. LOVE breastfeeding, HATE the pads. But yesterday, when the entire front of my shirt looked like...well, you get the picture...I was suddenly regretting my decision while sitting in the Ford waiting room.

Ford waiting room, you ask?
Moving 101: When you pack a cooler to travel with for over 3 days, be SURE to wrap your meat in plastic. Otherwise, when the meat thaws and the ice melts, a bloody, watery mess results. And if your cooler happens to be styrofoam, make sure it doesn't have a leak in it...otherwise the entire backseat carpet of your truck will be soaked in rotting meat blood. $21 worth of it.

And let me tell you how good THAT smelled. Gah! My life is a joke sometimes. Literally.

Soaking shirt.
Soaking carpet.
What's next, guys?
Dare I ask?

At least we always have Grama (Millie's Nana) to make us smile!!

Day One Thousand One Hundred and Sixty-Three

The Day That Wouldn't Quit Picking on Us

We all agree.
Yesterday was just...

...poopy.

(I didn't take a photo of the milk bomb that exploded all over the kitchen that Adam dropped either, or the $50 shipping fee it cost us to send a $68 package to California.)

The only highlight: we started our third trimester yesterday! 14 weeks left till we meet Baby Girl!

Day One Thousand and Eighty-Eight

The Time I Almost Died at Costco

I about dropped dead yesterday. Ok, maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration, but for sure, my heart at least skipped a beat and the breath was stolen from my lungs. I guess I could be considered naive when it comes to the price of car parts, but I didn't think I was that naive. Adam and I walked into Costco's tire center, hand in hand and smiling in love, and walked out $1,300 poorer, me shocked, wife glaring at her husband. Like, for real?! Oh my gosh, how is that even legal?! It's rubber, for goodness sakes!!! Ahhhhh!!! Adam warned me it would be expensive, but it didn't become reality until he punched that four-digit code into the machine, agreeing to the disappearance of our moneys. Do you know how much baby stuff I could buy for $1300?!! At least 3 strollers, a car seat, two diaper bags, a pack&play, AND some scoops of ice cream!! Pouty face. But, I do admit, however reluctantly, that a flat tire in the middle of nowhere with a newborn baby on board might be an issue...so, forced to pull the trigger, we bought new tires. And learned a very valuable lesson in the process:

ROTATE YOUR TIRES EVERY 6,000 MILES, people.

News to us. I mean, we obviously knew to rotate the tires, but we weren't aware that rotating them that often would almost DOUBLE their life. We only got 43K miles out of these bad boys before balding the outer walls almost completely, but after yesterday, I'm determined to make these new, stupidly expensive ones, last - at minimum - 70K miles. Cheers to hard, costly lessons, my friends!

Day One Thousand and Thirteen

The Time I was Almost Arrested in an International Airport

See that girl in the hat and scarf?
She's bad news, people.

Let's break down yesterday:
Well, first, I have to rewind to Thursday night. Ok, so Adam gets his travel itinerary to NOLA at 10 PM. He leaves Friday morning at 6 AM. Ready: get off your butt and pack! Thursday night, we threw as much stuff together as we could and found the pillow around midnight. Fast forward: it's 6 AM, Friday morning. We have to leave the house by 6:30AM to make it to the airport on time. It's 17 miles away. Ok, pack some more. Eat some yogurt. Drive drive drive. Aaaaand, goodbye to Adam.

Now, it's just me and all the leftovers. Oh baseball. You are unkind sometimes, even when you're trying to be kind. But enough thinking. Get to work. Ok, I need to return the car, wait first, clean the car. Car wash. Pack even more. Don't forget to take the bottles over 3 oz out of the carry-on. Clean. Laundry. Can't leave the McGough's with unwashed bedding! Get ready. Meanwhile, Mrs. McGough is downstairs cooking me breakfast. She delivers yet another beautiful meal. Exhale. Pack a little more, still. Ok, now, leave. Return the car. Wait, scratch that. Meet Christian first at the DoubleTree and pile luggage into his trunk. He's driving me to Fort Lauderdale International Airport later this evening. Now drive to the Lane's house and return the car. Channing and the girls drive behind me and swoop me up from my drop-off. Give security the key. Finally, I can see the light at the end of that impossibly long tunnel. Exhale. All's left: hang out, shop, and kill time before Christian meets us to pick me up. That, I can do. I bought a hat. Marissa returned clothes. Channing got a smoothie. Lara is the cutest pregnant girl alive. We're having fun. Then the clouds come.

Christian shows up. It's 4:30 and my flight leaves at 6:35. We're an hour away from Fort Lauderdale. Perfect timing. But the clouds. Oh no the clouds. Rain. Traffic. Lots of traffic. Lots of rain. This could complicate things. It does. We arrive at FLL at 5:37. Give or take. I have 12 minutes to check my bags. Remember: you must show up 45 minutes before your flight to guarantee your bags fly with you. Ok, so my bags might not make it. I've endured worse. The line isn't so bad though. Gosh, but there's only two people working it. Fart. It's 5:53 when I check in. The machine dings real loud, letting everyone around me and their mother know that Kendall Conley is late! Ohhhhh….everyone stares. I'm annoyed. Yes. I am. I gulp a deep breath. I can feel the sweat begin to bead up under my scarf. I shouldn't have worn it. Ah, but I get so cold on the plane! Yeah, definitely sweating now. My bags are on the carousel. Good. Hustle down the escalator. Sweat a little more. I meet a girl who's also late…albeit, she's later than me! Hey, it's not so bad after all. She grabs my hand and says, "Follow me." You're not Jesus, but in this case, I will. She taps shoulders and bats her lashes. Next thing I know, we're 8 people up in line. Yes. I'm gonna make it after all. I hand the security lady my phone to scan my boarding pass. She takes a long look at my ID aaaaaand, now I'm packing stuff onto the security bag checker thing. Shoes off. Ah man, I'm wearing sandals. If I contract a wart or fungus, I'll be so angry! Stand on your tiptoes Kendall. Computer out. Hat off. No liquids over 3 oz. in my bags! Nice. I'm such a good packer. Wait, what's that noise? Oh, the security metal detector is broken??? It beeps and beeps. And nobody's even in it. This is impossible!! Ahhhhh! So…what…let a potentially-blood-sucking-terrorist through, hoping he's not, or hold up the line until it's fixed? Hold up the line. Duh. But gosh darnit! More sweat. In any other situation, I'd of course use my better judgement to rationalize the need for the machine to be fixed. But I'm mad. This is all my fault, and I want to scream. I HAVE A FLIGHT TO CATCH, PEOPLE! FIGURE IT OUT. I don't say it, but I think it, so I'm just as guilty. Kendall, that's not nice. Calm down. Ok. I have 20 minutes until my flight leaves, it'll be fine. Wait for it. Wait for it. Machine's fixed! A large mass of people funnel through the security check. Including me. Nothing metal on this girl…now run and get your bag!

"MA'AM IS THIS YOUR BAG."
You've got to be kidding me. Yes, of course it's my bag. Who else in my vicinity would carry something so yellow and florally. Certainly not the men in front of or behind me. I again don't say those words, but crazier things are flying around my head. And mostly none of them are wrapped in grace. Now what?
"MA'AM, COME OVER HERE. DO YOU HAVE ANYTHING SHARP IN THIS BAG?"
Uh, no? Well, does a razor count? I might have left one of those in there by accident? Oh, I think there's a nail file. Come on though! Really? I have a bright yellow bag and there's no chance anyone with a brain would carry that loud bag if they had something to hide. It's YELLOW for Pete's sake.
"MA'AM ARE THESE YOURS? DID SOMEONE PUT THESE IN YOUR BAG?"

OH NO.
THE BULLETS.
THE 90 ROUNDS OF BULLETS.
ADAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Begin: panic.
"I, uh…golden birthday…husbands…they're his….good wife…wanted to make him happy…they're gold…golden birthday…24 on the 24th…he has an AR…we both have 9s…been traveling for 6 weeks…different house every week…so much travel…I forgot…living in suitcases…6 weeks…it was a mistake…accident…flight leaves in 9 minutes, I know. Please don't arrest me.

I'm mumbling, fumbling, searching for words. I can barely talk and I'm filled to the top of my new hat with embarrassment. Everyone's looking again. And their moms. I'm not a criminal! The head of security is here. She's calling the cops. Yes, you may have my ID. I hand it to her. She's making a report. I tell her all my information. The bullets confuse her. I can feel her eyes. They're piercing me. I swear, I am NOT a terrorist. AND WOMEN SHOOT GUNS TOO! She can't figure out how many rounds I have. I reach over to show her and she screams, "Don't touch that!!!" I'm terrified.

Here they come. 3 policemen. Handcuffs. Please don't put me in handcuffs. Did I mention the tears? Oh, the tears. If you know anything about me, it's easy to picture my face.
"Ma'am (I'm getting sick of that word. I never get sick of that word), owning ammunition isn't illegal. You're not going to jail. You just can't take them with you onto the plane. I'm shaking my head. Of course it's not illegal to have ammo! DUH, Kendall! But it is a federally prohibited item, so either you'll have to check this whole carry-on under the plane, or you'll have to discard your NINETY bullets. Wait, what time is your flight? It leaves in 4 minutes. Hold on, I'll be right back."

Scott, my officer-friend and saving grace - sprints to my gate and asks them to hold the plane. He comes back with the news, "We have one minute to re-scan your bag and be at the gate. Security: RE-CHECK THIS WOMAN'S BAG!" In the meantime, he whispers over to me that security should've been re-checking my bag the whole time he was at the gate. He blames them for taking three minutes instead of one. I remind him that definitely, this is all my fault, but his help and kindness spill over me and now I'm crying in gratitude. Well, some. My gate has to be closed by now. And other tears are coming down because of that fun fact. Alas, my bag is in my arms and Officer Scott and I are race-walking to Gate B4. Adam's birthday presents: gone. 90 rounds all for nothing. I can't think of how much money that is. I told Scott he could practice with them. He laughed. And we're still race-walking. I can see the gate…and I'm begging for a little victory. Scott perks up, "Are we good?" He's talking to the flight attendant and she's nodding her head. Now I'm shaking his hand. Saying goodbye. Scanning my boarding pass. It's 6:29 and I'm walking down the jetway. Hallelujah!

I'm the last one on. That's a given. I still have tears falling from my eyes. A mixture of so many emotions. There's one seat open and I slide in. I try not to make eye contact with my fellow passengers. If I tell them what just happened, they'll think I'm a terrorist. Ok, well, just look out the window and no one will see you. I look out. Lo and behold…MY BAGS ARE RIGHT OUTSIDE MY WINDOW!!!! Oh my gosh, this nightmare has made a severe turn! Not only have I made my flight, but so have my bags!!! I take a picture. More tears. I'm so happy. I'm sweating like a pig. Then I think of him. Adam. Oh, Adam. I finally check my phone. I've missed who knows how many calls from my worried sick husband. The last he heard from me was a text I sent him when they found the bullets: "The bullets were in my carry-on. I'm going to miss my flight. Might go to jail." I finally call him and instantly upon hearing his voice, I break down. Crying crying crying. Explaining to him in brevity, what happened. And now, I'm crying over the fact that in all the busyness of my day, I never called anyone in NOLA to  ask if they'd pick me up from the airport. He tells me about the airport cabs. I shudder (and cry some more) at the thought of taking one. But that's my only choice.
"I can take you home."
I'm dreaming. I look to my right. There's a sweet young woman sitting next to me. I think I hear her say something, and bewildered, I ask her "excuse me?"
"I can take you home."
I'm stunned. I ask her if she's sure. She is. I'm crying again. And now I have a ride. Meanwhile, I'm still on the phone with Adam explaining to him that the woman next to me is taking me home. Well, to the truck. But me and the girl haven't gotten that far yet. I can tell Adam is nervous, but I assure him that everything's ok. I assure him again. I love you, Adam.

Before I know it, Sylia and I have shared a two-hour conversation over a cup of wine, and now we're landing in NOLA. She's a twenty-something attorney, way cute, and the sweetest blessing I could ask for. We grab my bags from baggage claim, and then, I'm in her boyfriend's car and driving to the field. He's unsure of me, I can tell. I mean, his girlfriend offered a ride to a complete lunatic of a stranger…who's been questioned by the head of security, security agents, and three policemen about the bullets in her bag. I tell him the story. We all laugh. And then we're at the truck and saying goodbye.

_____________________________

It seems to me that I wanted to get back to NOLA so bad that I almost didn't. Still mulling over what I was supposed to take away from my last few hours in Jupiter/Fort Lauderdale, but well, at least I made it. And now, in the comfort of my own NOLA home, I can spend the next bit reflecting on how the Lord used these last six weeks and even the insanity of my last day there, to teach me something about myself, his glory, and the work of his sovereign hand.

Exhale.
Thank you to EVERYONE who's helped us through these last six weeks. It's been an incredible journey, filled with so many different emotions, and Adam and I can't even begin to express our gratitude for everything you've been to us, given to us, and done for us. We are humbled and radically grateful. And hopefully, I gave you a little laugh in return for all you sacrificed for us :)

Oh yeah. Adam throws tomorrow for the Zephyrs at 1PM CST!

Day Eight Hundred and Twenty-Six

The Time I Sat Outside a Gun Range. Alone.
(Sad Face)

When appropriate, I leave my purse at home. Like, when we go to dinner. Or when we go to the beach. Or whenever we go anywhere that Adam is in charge of the bill. Which is mostly most the time. I normally only take it with me when it's just me…or when we go to church when I pack my purse with fourteen hundred pounds of Bible and books. Yesterday, I wasn't by myself. And I wasn't going to church. So, I left it at home.

BIG MISTAKE.
Turns out, you need a driver's license to shoot a gun. Adam obviously knew that and accidentally overlooked the fact that I didn't walk out of the condo with my bag. Rats. So, while Adam shot his new gun, I sat and read my new Kindle, with my new gun by my side…glaring at me. We live 12 miles from the range we're members of, so driving back wasn't really an option. Nor was wasting the gas and nobody getting to shoot. Lesson: learned.

Day Eight Hundred and Ten

The Field of Dreams

Put your glasses on. Maybe even squint your eyes a bit. Now look as far into the photo as you can. See that little green dot? It's at the base of the tree in the very center of the image, if you're having a hard time…like I did. Any guesses at what that might be? No? I'll tell ya: it's Adam's target. He finally found a place to bow shoot outside (for practice)! My hunter's been having the toughest luck finding an open field down here that isn't private property - or public, for that matter - to sight his bow. Apparently, a bow and arrow is considered a firearm (news to me) here, so he can't just practice at any old place. But his luck changed yesterday when he called up one of our friends from church…a friend who happens to own a nice big 5 acre lot not far from our home. And while I was out getting my hair fried off at the salon (like literally, chunks of hair falling out of my head…I was mortified and fearing baldness) Adam was in target practice heaven. With acres and acres of potential practice land. Lucky duck.

Day Seven Hundred and Sixty-Four

The Time I (Probably) Ate a Bug (or Two)

Adam started official offseason workouts yesterday.
This is proof that reintroduction to weights and early morning alarms is detrimental to your afternoons. Adam never naps. Not ever. They're bad for our marriage. He wakes up in just the most foul of moods and can't shake it till the next day. So, unless he's really extraordinarily tired, he fights the urge to nap. But yesterday, he fell prey to his exhaustion...and to the extreme comfort of our giant bean bag. I can't fault him. I was just as tired. But in order to fight the dreaded Adam-After-Nap-Monster, a trip to Olive Garden (Adam's favorite) for dinner was scheduled. Well, turns out, that the closest Olive Garden (17 miles away) actually doesn't exist anymore. We found that out once we arrived at the destination and nothing was there. Cool. The next closest Olive Garden was another 8 miles South of that, making our total drive time 30 minutes. On a hungry stomach, that's a lot. But not the worst. The worst was when I pulled a nasty, ugly, big ol, long-legged bug out of ma salad. Then worse than that, Adam had to console me when I started crying, completely convinced that I'd probably eaten four bugs by then (he later told me I'd make a bad Fear Factor contestant...he's right). Still worse though, I was so grossed out - and really upset - that the manager comped us our meal immediately...but we hadn't even ordered dessert yet, so I didn't even get any pumpkin cheesecake! Noooooooooo!!!

And obviously, I was too nauseated at the time to even think about whipping out my camera and snapping a few shots of my salad-dweller...so just imagine a dark black, peanut-sized, creepy-crawler type thing, with silvery markings on it's back, and slightly resembling Adam in the photo above - all balled up and rigumortis-like. I know, disgusting. Safe to say that yesterday wasn't our best.

Day Seven Hundred and Sixty

The Deception of a Dirty, Sneaky Husband

After too many days away, we're 100% officially home now.
Ahhhhh. The sun. The heat. The smell. The water. The sweat. Home, we are!
And yes, in case you were wondering, Adam's feet can be multi-purposed as paddles or even emergency flotation devices! (Holy gigantic)

In other news. I caught Adam in - dare I say - a lie last night. And right before bed!! Ok, maybe it wasn't necessarily a lie per say, but he was trying to hide something naughty from me...and that's just as bad! You see, I was cozied up in his sweats all evening. Why? Because they're cozy, duh! When it was time to go to bed, I did what any responsible and clean household member would do...I PUT HIS SWEATS BACK INTO THEIR DRAWER. But when I opened the drawer, what did I find...?

...his dirty clothes - which he had just taken off - wadded into a ball and thrown into the drawer!!! WHAT?! You've got to be kidding me, right?! So when I started opening the drawer, he tried scrambling as fast as he could across the bed (pictured above) to distract me. It didn't work. I saw those nasty clothes in a heartbeat and then looked at him in horror. He cracked up, and barely got out the words, "I thought there was NO CHANCE you were gonna look in there!" Nu uh, honey. No no no no no! Not in this house! Unbelievable. I married a rascal and I am so in for it when we have kids. Uhhhhhh! Hahahaha!
