The Conley Crowd
A while back, actually last year at WSU, Adam and I made a bet. From it, only bragging rights could be won. But after watching him pitch today, a small part of me is thankful that we've yet to see it through. The terms are simple: whoever completes the task first, wins. The task? Adam must pole vault 10 feet. And I must hit his ball in fair territory. Hmmm? We've had countless discussions regarding this bet, and as of last week, we concluded that the potential for me to win is slightly greater than his. Slightly. I could get lucky; he could get a broken neck. Well, today I decided otherwise. My potential for hitting anything off him would be nothing less than a miracle. Especially now that he's mixing! He's finally throwing his slider, which looks outstanding, and his changeup is just as impressive. And, as always, his fastball is, well, fast. Really fast. 95 today. Last year, when all he threw was his fastball, we figured that at some point, if I swung the bat at the right time (during our bet), chances would have it that I'd be able to make contact. I'd just have to swing right when the ball left his hand. Haha. But now, I don't stand a chance. I wouldn't be able to time the ball even remotely close. He'd throw a changeup or a slider, and I'd be swinging the bat as if a fastball were coming. And then, once I'd timed up a slider, he'd throw the fastball. Good for him. Good for his career. Bad for me. Bad for my side of the bet. And, not to mention, could you even imagine standing in the batter's box, while something moving 95 MPH headed straight for your face?! No thank you. I'd take falling 13 feet from the ground any day.
This bet will be won someday, though. By one of us. Count on it.
And yes, I'm cheating again. Sometimes cheating is good. Right? One wasn't enough...two wasn't either. Indecision. It always gets the best of me. AH! But I couldn't leave any of them out! There was so much to photograph today! Like look! Adam had a CROWD!! This was literally the biggest crowd I've seen at any of the minor league games this year!! These are some of our dear friends, and we love them all so much! It was six months ago that we met Pastor Jimmy (back center with glasses) for lunch, and ever since, our lives have been marked by some beautiful people. Today after church, they came out to support Adam, and he gave them quite the show. Seriously, so fun.
Aaaaand then...rain. Lots of rain. Not too long after Adam finished his four innings, the clouds came out, and they weren't playing around. What was once dry, was, in about 2 minutes, soaking wet. By the time I made it to my car, I might as well have just gotten out of the shower. And by the time the Mets boys made it back to their bus, they were winded (from running so fast), drenched, and most likely very stinky. I'm thankful I wasn't apart of that trip home!
It cracked us up watching them all run so quickly for shelter...it was like a small stampede! Haha!
