The Goodbye to Fluoride
As and RH- mama (part of my certain kind of blood type), I've done a reasonable amount of research on how to best ensure that Baby Girl's blood and my blood don't mix during childbirth. If it happens that baby's blood RH is different than mine and our bloods mix, then my blood could potentially form antibodies against her blood type, meaning that in consecutive pregnancies, if the baby's blood type is again different than mine, my built up antibodies from this pregnancy could attack the future baby's blood supply (however, in a normal pregnancy, mom's blood and baby's blood don't ever mix...but in cases of trauma to the abdomen, miscarriage, c-section, forceps delivery or other more invasive procedures, mixing can occur). Obviously not wanting my antibodies to attack my future babes, and also not wanting to compromise this pregnancy by receiving any interventions (including Rhogam), I've found ways to minimize the likelihood of this blood mixing from happening:
1) Having a gentle, natural birth
2) Natural delivery of the placenta
3) Good nutrition
4) Drinking red raspberry leaf tea
5) Delayed cord clamping
6) ELIMINATING FLUORIDE
The top 5, I'm all over! But fluoride? Say whaaaat? When I discovered fluoride was something I should avoid, I began looking into why. Apparently, fluoride interferes with the production of collagen. Ok, so? Well, collagen is what attaches the placenta firmly to the uterine wall. If the placenta begins to detach before the delivery of Baby Girl, bleeding occurs and could introduce the blood mixing event. Therefore, eliminating fluoride was a high priority. That's when we ditched our fluoridated toothpaste. Then, with further research, I learned that the vast majority of the water supply in America is fluoridated (was I the only one who didn't know this?)! So, then more research. And ultimately, Adam and I made the decision - based on what we learned - to distance ourselves from fluoride as much as possible...not only for the sake of my uterus, but for other reasons as well (http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2013/04/30/water-fluoridation-facts.aspx <--- for a quick summary). That's when we started purchasing reverse osmosis filtered water. No more tap. No more Brita. Just a couple of jugs filled up at Publix every two days. It's not a perfect system, but it's a whole lot better than the alternative! Now we just need a filter for our sink and showers!

Obviously, this is a choice that Adam and I are making together and realize, once again, that we're not scientists or professionals or anyone of credibility, but we feel this is best for our family, so we're going for it!
