Day One Thousand and Thirty-Seven

The Forgotten Thrill

It's the All-Star Break.
And for this Conley family, that's code for: three lazy days together doing a whole lot of doing nothing.
But it's good nothing. It's giving us time to regroup, refocus, and reenergize for the rest of season. We've been keeping pretty quiet at home, fixing meals together and watching our show, but yesterday, after an early morning errand, we decided to get out an explore. We ended up here, at what used to be Six Flags New Orleans. Before Hurricane Katrina destroyed it 9 years ago, this place was vibrant and shouting with life. Now, it sits abandoned and alone. Nothing's been changed. Nothing's been removed. No work has been done. Except for that of graffiti artists and illegal trespassers who've torn the place up even further. We tried to enter the gates yesterday, but to our surprise, we were met by security officers who now sit at every entrance, banning people away from the dangerous leftovers. Various species of wild snakes, alligators, hogs, and poisonous spiders make up the old terrain of giggling children and thrill seekers alike. It's a devastating sight, and though we weren't allowed to see much at all, we drove away with a sort of sadness and outrage that still, nothing's been done to clean up this mess.
