Day Six Hundred and Fifty-Eight

The Patriotic Flying Prosthetic

First Baptist Downtown Jacksonville loves our troops. As they - or anyone - should. And with the Fourth of July right around the corner, the church put together a very special and robust service to honor the men and women who serve and protect this country with their lives.

Thank God for our freedom. And thank FBC Jax for this beautiful celebration.

I was on my way to the grocery store after church, as a horrific scene unfolded before my eyes. I was sitting at a red light - behind one small car - and all of a sudden, I witnessed my first auto accident. A 90-year-old woman was making a left hand turn when suddenly, another 60-year-old pedestrian man was flipping onto her car. He rolled up the front of the car, then back down. And then a leg went flying. She continued driving another 3 seconds before finding the break pedal (she's 90...probably not the quickest reflexes), and I was sure that some other part of his body was trapped under the car. Immediately, I called 911. I then recognized the leg to be a prosthetic (thank goodness) and witnessed the man scooting himself from under the car. She apparently hadn't hit him too hard, and everyone was ok. Or at least that's what the policeman told me before I left. Holy smokes. I'd prefer not to witness anything like that ever again.

And then, right after grocery shopping, I headed to the field. The Suns had a 3:00 game and I had some visitors waiting for me there. And though I had a great time catching up with friends, all I really wanted to do was sleep. BUT, it wasn't until SEVEN O'CLOCK when the winning run (ours) finally crossed home plate. We went 11 innings...and when I got home, I was lights out.

But notice the field? In the bottom of the 11th, with bases loaded, the opposing team brought in their center fielder to play between the second baseman and shortstop...in order to increase their chances of fielding a ground ball. I'd never seen this before, so I obviously took a picture of it :) Their plans were thwarted, however, when their pitcher hit our batter...walking in the winning run.
