The Monster Storm Sandy
Never in this lifetime has America seen a storm like Sandy. She landed in the New York/New Jersey area and wreaked unprecedented havoc from North Carolina to New England and as far west as Michigan. An estimated $50 billion in damages is expected. A hurricane turned cyclone mixed with a winter storm and created this megastorm, leaving so much of the Northeast under water. The transportation system is completely shut down, the stock exchange was closed two days in a row, millions are without power, winds are gusting up to 80 MPH, a blizzard has taken over Virginia, and 45 Americans have now lost their lives. A sad story is being written into history right now. And they need prayer.
In the year that Adam and I have been in Florida, we've never seen the waves crash to shore here like they were yesterday...and Sandy isn't even near us. Two days ago, she passed by the Bahamas, leaving us only with high winds, some rain, and a cold front. And still, the waves haven't receded.
Adam and I were transfixed by the strength of the ocean. We've never seen waves so big and so constant. In the hour that we visited Juno Pier, the tide washed over the entire width of the beach.
Sea foam. Another first for the Conleys. I've always liked the color "sea foam green," but this totally topped the shade. It's just like the foam from a big, cozy bubble bath...only it's made naturally by the raging sea. I was in awe.
As far as we could see, the waves were relentless. Never stopping for a break. It was beautiful, but so scary...even though these waves pale in comparison to those that smashed into New Jersey last night.
Only one man on the beach thought it was appropriate and completely safe to be flirting with the ocean tides. Hopefully he found something worth the risk. Geeze.
From space, this is what Sandy looked like. So completely terrifying.
