Day Two Hundred and Ninety-Seven

The Hammerhead Home-Opener

On days that Adam starts, time creeps by painfully. We’re both anxious. And I’m nervous. Really nervous. It’s the absolute worst when you’re stuck in a hotel room until 5 PM with nothing to do but sit on the bed and wait. And wait. It looked like we might have another one of those days today, only this time at home. Not ok. You see, when we woke up this morning, we still didn’t have anything in the apartment to sit on besides the bed. And though it’s the world’s comfiest bed, it’s still a bed nonetheless. So, we decided against bed-sitting all day and went to our storage unit to get the couch. An hour later, our living room looked like this. And an hour after that, a couch! Finally, something to sit on besides a mattress! Wahoo! And yes, the entire time we were moving things, I was paranoid about Adam’s energy expenditure. Turns out, he pitches better when he’s done something during his painful wait!

His arm looked great today…just like he did! It was his first Hammerhead start at home, and he certainly gave the crowd – an outrageously large crowd for Jupiter – a show. With one out in the fourth inning, Adam had a perfect game going. After giving up the first hit of the game, he still had a shutout in line. His changeup, fastball, and slider were all working well today and the innings went by quickly. It felt so good to watch him find success today. He’s worked incredibly hard and certainly is getting the results because of it. In the fifth inning, after a few weird plays, Adam left the game after throwing 67 pitches and striking out 5. He’s on a five-inning limit still, and it’ll likely remain the same until later on in the season. The coaches want to make sure that Adam will be available and ready to pitch during the last games of the year, so they need to “save” his arm now. Here’s his line for the night: 5 IP, 5 H (2 should have been errors!!!!!!! Grrrrr), 3 R, 0 BB, 5 K.  He didn’t end up getting the W, and did give up 3 runs, but if you’d have been at the game, you’d agree too that none of them should have been earned. Ahhh rats! Such is baseball.

There to see Adam’s home-opener were 17 of our sweet friends from Family Church. Taking up 4 rows and cheering like crazy, we enjoyed a fun and rewarding time at the park today. Adam and I are so thankful for each one of them, and feel blessed to have such a strong and supportive group of people surrounding us. We love you all!!
