Day Two Hundred and Seventy-One

The 10 Dollar/Day Fee

Ever since April 5th, preparing lunch and dinner is no longer apart of my "job description." Instead, Adam's clubbie takes on the precious role. And yes, I'm secretly jealous. I love cooking for my husband...even if it ends up tasting bad!

In just a few short months, I've learned so much about this baseball life that I previously had absolutely no idea existed. One of the many new obscurities that I've come to understand is the job of a clubbie. (Actually, I don't even know if that's spelled correctly? Clubby? Hmmm...) Each professional team has one. They're in charge of meal preparation, laundry, mail delivery, and so on. Daily, the clubby charges ALL players on the team a fee for his services. Usually, it costs the boys 6 to 7 dollars per day. You must pay the fee, regardless of preference. You don't want him to feed you? Too bad. You'd better pay up.

When you travel on the road, the clubbie of the home team is also in charge of preparing the visiting team's meals and such. The visiting team must also, therefore, pay for his services. At the cheapest rate, Adam had to pay $4/day in Hagerstown. But Augusta was a different story...he was charged $10/day. WOW.

Since "clubbie dues" were so expensive this series, Adam made sure to get his money's worth. After breakfast in the hotel (which is usually free), he'd eat a decent meal at the sandwich bar in the clubhouse. Between practice and game time, he again ate more. Finally, once the game ended, Adam ate a third time...and with a fee so extreme, the dinners, I heard, were really good. I suppose, in the end, that $10/day isn't so bad for 3 meals. Still, I'd rather cook for my boy!

But if they're being offered Otter Pops, then the 10 bucks is definitely worth it!
