The Opening Day That Never Opened
In 122 home games, the Greensboro Grasshoppers haven't had to cancel a game. Well, that stat is history now, because on day 123, the new Grasshoppers started their own tradition. A rain out on Opening Day.
Adam was scheduled to throw tonight, debuting his professional career as the starter for the Grasshoppers of Green and Orange. But, the weather had other plans, and now these butterflies swarming around my belly have to stay another 24 hours. And I know it's just driving Adam crazy! All day long, he was anxious for our 4:45 departure to the field. He loves pitching, and if he had it his way, he'd have already thrown ten minutes after getting off the plane on Sunday! It seems this week has dragged on, even though we've both been so busy. Anxious nerves waited for today in as much patience as we could muster, but true to fashion, our patience will be tested one day longer. And I think by tomorrow, Adam will be so jacked to pitch that he might let a 98 fly. I'm ok with that! :)
When we showed up to the field, skies were gray, but the rain was absent. Not half an hour later, tiny pellets sprinkled my head. At that time, they covered the mound, and we were still in our seats. It was only 6:30 and Adam wouldn't be out for another 15 minutes. We wished it away, but instead of leaving us, more came. And more. And it wasn't stopping.
They finally pulled out the white tarp, and it stayed there the rest of the night. The sold out crowd went home without their Season Opener. And I went home with one bummed husband.
