Day One Hundred and Eighty-Seven

The Inning

Baseball season has officially arrived.
And boy is he making it look good!

For the first time since September, Adam took to the mound. He's worked long and hard for his Spring Training debut, and it's surely one we'll never forget. With twenty extra pounds, a sharp new uniform, and what they call "flow," Adam repped Big League swag. His "stuff" (that means pitches) was as good as I've ever seen it, but he does have a few kinks to iron out.

Adam was scheduled to pitch two innings today, but when thunder and lightning came striking down only a few miles from us, the game was called after his first inning. And by that time, cats and dogs were falling from the dark gray sky above.
(Shelby, this does not mean actual cats and dogs were popping out of the clouds....no, it was just raining really hard. Haha. Love you!)

He came in during the top of the 3rd. And in the five hitters he faced, almost every possible situation occurred. In true Conley fashion, Adam struck out the very first batter of the season. Stud. Two pitches into the next guy, the count was 0-2, and I was getting way too excited. Two K's in a row would be quite the impressive start, but when his fastball found refuge in the hitter's ribs, I cringed as the Cardinal took his base. Could you imagine what it would feel like to get pegged in the rib with a ball moving 94 MPH?! OUCH! So now: one punchout and one walk. Not too bad. When the third guy came up, I got a little nervous. But he popped up to shallow center. Two outs. Whew. Then hitter 4 came up and changed the scenery a bit. Adam's first two pitches to this guy were both balls, so he had to throw a fastball in this situation to even up the count. Well, a fastball is exactly what he threw, and a bomb is exactly what the dude hit. Homerun :(  In all the games I've seen Adam throw, I might have seen him give up one homerun. Maybe. The last hitter hit a long fly ball into right field, and thankfully, his teammate in Right caught it easily. It was certainly an interesting inning, and for a second, I feared what might happen when Adam got back home. Good news though! Adam's alive, we didn't get in a fight, and the coaches still liked what they saw. However, next time, they'd like to see him mix a bit more. All things considered, Adam certainly gained a lot out of today and he's already excited for his next appearance! I'm so proud of him. So lucky to be his girl.

And might I just mention that I've picked up quite baseball accent. Adam's bullpen jargon is rubbing off considerably, and it's naturally found its way into my vocabulary. Love it.
