The SuperHero Scramble
"3.5 miles of wicked terrain, with 18+ obstacles and major water crossings," is what superheroscramble.com read. Sound like something the Conleys might enjoy? You bet. Mingle in a costume contest, gooey slime, live music, and free beer, and you've got us hooked on this race for years to come. The horn blasted and Team Newlywed was off on our first competition as a couple. Obstacle one wasn't far from the starting line: a 70 yard swim across a river. And you'd think that all the laps we've done in the past month would pay off? Not so! Weighed down by shoes and extra clothing, Adam was fearful that I might drown right in front of his very eyes. But slowly, we made it across successfully. Thankful that that part of the race was over, I was excited to see #2. Another 70 yard swim. You've got to be kidding me! I pouted for only a few moments and dove in. And I'm alive! The rest of the scramble treated us a bit more kindly. We only had to jump over a pit of fire, scale a 15 foot rock wall, army crawl through thick mud, carry sandbags over a narrow bridge, balance across a suspended swaying beam, climb a slime wall, top a 15 foot cargo net, leap off a cliff, and slide through a finale of the most slippery and slimiest slime. Not to mention the race portion of the race. Yes, running. And lots of it. If not for me, Adam would have finished in a much more impressive time, but instead chose to keep pace with his bride. We finished together and enjoyed a big, sloppy, wet, and slimy kiss to top it off. And, our costumes, you might wonder? A bride and groom couple who received an outstanding amount of encouragement in our new lives together.
This event was SuperHero Scramble's first ever, and their successes today have kickstarted their efforts. With 5% of their gross earnings going directly to charity, their company's contributions lead the nation by percentage. We feel privileged to have been a part of their race, and pray for their continuous commitment to serving those who need it most.
