Day 3,688

The New and Improved School Schedule and Goals

How it’s going!

Our first and third graders are killing school lately and we’re so proud of them! I’ve taken a bit of a different approach to our homeschooling goals this year and it has been SUCH a welcomed change. They’re both excelling and enjoying what they’re learning, which is part of the goal and half the battle. I’ve chosen to become more sensitive to their personal interests (Bearett is most fascinated by history, science, reading, and art while Amelia excels in math and writing) and tailoring the focus to enhance their learning in those areas—especially with Bub. Certainly not to the neglect of the other subjects, but I think I’m onto something when THIS is his response to completing an especially difficult math fact sheet—the subject in which we have the most difficult time focusing on and enjoying. Woo!

We’ve split our school day into two chunks, with the bulk of the work being finished in the “morning” and the remaining completed at nap time. Amelia usually completes all of hers in the morning, as she has much less work than Bub, which allows one-on-one time with Bear in the afternoon, naps for all three girls (Amelia still naps every other day), and a mostly open afternoon otherwise for PLAY!

And once everyone’s awake and school’s done, we have more together play, chores, the baseball game, supper preparation (Kate is killing it in the kitchen lately!), supper, an activity, family Bible study, and bedtime!
