Day Thirteen Hundred and Sixty-Five

The Call

Four years ago - to the very day - Adam and I were sitting at his Dad's house watching the computer. It was the second day of the 2011 draft, and we were anxiously waiting to see where we'd be making our new home...and career. On June 7, 2011 the Marlins selected him in the second round. Fast forward exactly four years to yesterday, and Adam finally got the call he's been waiting for his whole life.

Following Sunday's game in New Orleans, Coach called him into the office. Adam didn't think much of it - he was actually assuming that he was being disciplined for not knowing the time of the shuttle a few days prior (Who Adam? Not remembering to look at the itinerary? Nooooo. Ha!). Coach Haines and Coach Duffy instead surprised him when they asked the question, "Where's your wife and daughter?" Uh, I actually don't know right now because they've had the absolute worst day trying to fly home from Tacoma and missed a few of their flights. They've been up since 3AM. "Well, when you get ahold of her, tell her that you're going to the Big Leagues!"

After that, he can't exactly  remember what happened or how he reacted. He was obviously excited, but it was a blur, he said.

Me though? I remember my reaction just fine.
Adam called me while I was sitting in Longhorn Steakhouse in the Atlanta airport. I needed a real-ish meal. Amelia and I had just endured one of the hardest travel days ever, and it wasn't even halfway over by the time he got ahold of us at 4PM (Considering all my airport horror stories, that's saying a lot). I had puke in my hair, spit stains on my shirt, sweat rolling down my back, I smelled like a garbage truck, and had one exhausted crying baby on my lap. Oh, and I'd gotten 4 hours of sleep for the second night in a row. Safe to say that initially, when he called, I was a bit annoyed, frustrated, and way too tired. He asked me where I was. "In Atlanta...I just texted you that. Why didn't you read my text? Why didn't you reply? Adam what - " Just never mind. When will you be home? " No. No way! This isn't happening right now. You got called up didn't you?!!"
And...queue the tears.
I knew immediately. And I was so happy. Speechless. His lifelong dream...coming true.

With mascara running down my cheeks, I cried like my little baby in the middle of the restaurant. I was overwhelmingly overjoyed - ecstatic. Filled with emotion I didn't know was in me. But, truly, I was a little bummed too...I desperately wanted to hug him. To be near him. To witness his reaction first hand. To tell him in person all the things I was trying to say over the phone. It was sudden, disorganized, and everything I didn't think it would happen like. BUT it happened. Finally. After years and years of commitment beyond measure, he'd succeeded. And he said it best:

"God in His mercy has allowed me to play a game I love, and yesterday I found out I get to do it at the highest level."

Amen and praise the Lord!

We're infinitely proud of you, Daddy.
And even though yesterday was an absolute circus of a day, it fits into our story perfectly and that's all the reason to love it - and you - even more. Can't wait to catch some zzzzzzzs with you. And even better...can't wait to watch you don that Marlins jersey for the very first time. You are wonderful. More than I ever knew.

The biggest CON-GRATULATIONS to you, Adam!
So excited to see how the Lord chooses to use us in Miami.
I love you forever.
Millie does too.
