Day Thirteen Hundred and Thirty-Five

The Mistake I Won't Make Again

It was supposed to be a five and a half hour trip.
358 miles from New Orleans to Memphis.
Yeah, it took us nine.
And all the extra minutes accumulated in this position here.
Back seat.
Side of the road.
Baby on lap.

She wouldn't fall asleep on her own (no surprise there), but she also wouldn't stay asleep alone (huge surprise there).
- Problem -
So, I did the best I could and held her eyes shut (while shaking the car seat with my other hand) until she fell asleep...and then sat there like this (and in other positions I won't mention now because driving with one arm outstretched behind you from the front seat probably isn't all that legal) until I felt like I could remove my hand without her realizing my deception. Then I'd crawl back into the front seat and inch the hair dryer sound effect up a couple notches on the volume dial. It obviously didn't work as well as I'd hoped, seeing that every hour, we played this game...over and over and over.

But guess what?
We're alive.
We're happy.
She has the cutest double chin.
And the long road trip was completely worth it when we laid eyes on Daddy.
I'm just not so sure that there will ever be a next time the way we did it. Driving solo for that long doesn't exactly work with a 10 week old (yeah, she was TEN weeks yesterday). At least not for mine.

Oh Mom, please don't tell me we have to do that again?!
