The Fifteenth Start of 2016
AKA: Motown.
Where tiny girls watch their daddys dominate from just 21 rows away.
Adam took on the Tigers last night in what was one of his best starts to date. At least through 4 1/3 innings. Until then, he had struck out nine hitters and was on pace for a new personal best. In his first at bat against one of the best hitters in baseball, Adam got him swinging.
Amelia was just SO happy with Dad's performance by that point, that she punched her new friend with the Tiger #1 finger right in the face. Such a charmer. In two innings, he had struck out 6 hitters. By the third, he had struck out eight - which ties the season high for most strikeouts in three innings in the MLB. Only two other pitchers have recorded that stat this year. We were getting REALLY excited about what was to come later in the evening.
Cabrera's second at-bat was the same result as his first. Struck out swinging. By this point, Mama is elated and fist pumping without pause. Into the Fifth he went, striking out the leadoff hitter once again. But then, everything dissolved. And fast. He walked the next guy. The guy after him belted a two-run homer. Score: 3-2. The next guy hit a double. The next guy walked. The next guy was again Cabrera and he wasn't about to be struck out a third time. So, with the count full, Adam threw a changeup and Miggy said "bye bye" to the baseball. Homer. FIVE runs in 1/3 of an inning. Just like that. At that was the end of Adam's night. And Mom's good time. My heart felt like it was being ripped out of my chest and stomped on. I texted my family that I hated baseball. Because sometimes, I really do. It has a way of taking you way way way up and then torpedoing you to the ground without any consideration whatsoever. I melted back into my chair and did everything I could not to cry.
And then Amelia went and tried buying me a beer.
Oh, what a little sweetheart.
They carded her though and so she just took some ice instead.
If nothing else, at least the sunset was pretty.
Adam's line:
4.1 IP, 4H, 5R, 5ER, 3BB, 9K, 2HR and the Loss.
He's 4-5 with a 3.90 ERA
He pitches again on Sunday against the Braves in Fort Bragg - a military base. More to come on that, so stay tuned.
